Tour d'Davis

While the Professor couldn't come on the Tour d'Davis, too far, too many drunk people, accidents, and beer and dogs don't mix. He did get to come to the after party with his best friend Tumpy here they are making out in Sean's lap.

The Prof and The Femur

Last night the Professor got into a pretty bad dog fight at the park. He and another dog both wanted the same frisbee and when dogs become aggressive towards him he fights back, and boy did he fight back. When we finally separated the two the eat had a hold of the other, biting each others flanks and didn't want to let go. So to get him exercise we decided to go play with a nice dog who we know is always fun, Riff-Raff. Well Riff-Raff is a rescued German Shepard who doesn't always like his chew toys. In the bast he's given the Prof a giant bully stick and this visit he surrendered to the Prof an entire cow's femur bone. As you can see it's bigger than he is and he can't even lift it he just drags it around the livingroom and gnaws for hours on end.

Lake Berryessa

Two weeks ago the Prof went for a lovely hike to Lake Berryessa. Here he took on water fowl much bigger than ducks and probably bigger than himself, Canadian Geese.... with goslings. Again Sarah freaked out, afraid that the Prof would chase geese forever and finally crawl out of the lake on the other side only to go wild and live with a family of coyotes. Again I was prooven wrong and my puppy's love for me conquered his desire to run away. Once he got tired he responded to my desperated calls of "Professor Come!" and swam against the current home to mommy. (That little speck is his head) Then Stephan and Kati found a tennis ball and with my trust in the puppy renewed I let him off leash again to play some fetch in the lake. Later he decided to go say hello to some men in paddle boats who were kind enough to lead him back to shore. Next weekend we are planning a return trip to Point Isabelle with reenforcements in the form of Aunt Sarah, possibly the Professor's favorite person in the whole world.

So, you think we got a water dog?

This weekend was a busy one for the professor. On Saturday was UC Davis Picnic Day, we brought the professor and he got to see how well trained border collies herd sheep. We also learned that the professor gets really excited and barks at sheep when they get close. After the border collies, we went and ate lunch at the pub, and the professor laid under the table for a while, drinking water, chewing on ice, eating flowers, playing with our buddies. FUN! Then we went to see the frisbee dog championships, and saw some amazing doggie acrobatics. Finally, we walked down to see the battle of the bands, and laid around playing with the prof. It was hot and the professor was very tired by the end of the day.

Sunday we decided to drive out near Berkeley to the largest off-leash dog park in the country: Point Isabel Regional Seashore Park. The park is right on the S.F. Bay, and has a cafe and dog washing shop called Mudpuppies right at the entrance.

The park has a slough that flows into the bay, and it was one of the first things that the professor noticed upon entering. We were trying to walk out to the Point, which is about a half mile walk around the slough from the entrance (the picture is taken from the bridge you have to walk to), when the professor noticed that there were birds in the slough: DUCKS! And...he was off!

He ran down into the muddy slough (the tide was out, leaving about 2 feet of very soft mud for him to "run" - or hop repeatedly - though on either side of the water) and chased the ducks back and forth up and down the slough for hundreds of yards, and about a half an hour. I'm pretty sure the ducks were taunting him, letting him get so tantalizingly close, before flying another 20 yards out of reach. We realized that he's actually quite a good swimmer, this is the first time he's ever really had a chance.

Also, Sarah FREAKED THE FUCK OUT! I think she thought he was going to swim to Alcatraz, make a break for it and never come back. He did come back though, we were shocked, okay, not that shocked.

He got to run around and play for a long time, including lots more duck chasing, and some squeeky ball kleptomania. When Karen, Rob, and Jim showed up after biking and BARTing in from Mountain View, the professor had swum out into the bay after a duck and come back onshore around the point in a great expanse of muck. It is actually quite amazing what a layer of mud caked on your dog will do to his look. Unsurprisingly, we made sure to stop at Mudpuppies to wash him down on the way out of the park.

Anyway, all of this frolicking takes a lot out of a pup, so we thought we'd let him drink some water to keep him hydrated. He liked this idea as well, and drank a few large cupfulls of water back-to-back. Then he wandered into the bushes and puked the most watery dog puke, a mix of mud, bay water, seaweed, chili, and the gallon of water we forcefed him.

When we got back into Davis we headed over to Tomas' going away party. Tomas is the only person that the prof has ever humped, so he's really going to miss that dirty Swede. Dr. Farnsworth needed to check out the house to make everything was in order, and decided that Andy's house was a bit too full of bugs, so he started eating them - and only stopped briefly to completely flip out when we hit the pinata.

All in all, an eventful weekend!

Lessons of the Day

Today we learned two important lessons about what causes the Professor to go ape-shit, #1 Thunder and #2 Cats. Always the fearless puppy, when the Prof experienced his first thunderstorm he barked for one full minute and then rang the bell to go outside and find out what the hell that big noise was. Puppy class today went a million times better than last week. The Professor was able to pay attention, sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay as well attack the cat! Woodstock the "training cat" came to class to meet all the puppies. Everyone was able to sit while the cat approached except the Prof who whined, back-flipped and pounced on the cat. Good thing the "training cat" is trained not to attack dogs.

Pink Eye and The End of the Best Week Ever

The Professor went an entire week without any potty accidents including a weekend stay at Aunt Sarah's house. Unfortunately he came down a serious case of pink eye in his left eye today and the beginnings of conjunctivitis in his right eye. Clearly all that sniffing of other dogs butts and rubbing his face on the ground caused him to get bacteria in his eye. Now he enjoys being forced to hold still while we rub antibiotic goop in his eyes. Yay $90 for goop! He's also developing the unfortunate habit of "trashy mouth" where he picks up almost anything he can find on the ground and chews on it, meaning that we will probably be paying another $90 for a deworming visit any day now.

Puppy's First Bath

Professor's first bath was anticipated to be a joyous and fun occasion due to his clear affinity to water in creek form and as mud puddles however this was a very big mistake. I came home to find Sean holding him in the bathtub with the floor covered in mud and the Professor looking very forlorn about his situation. Once released from the tub he celebrated by slipping past the towel and reveling in his freedom on the couch. This was followed by an attempt to look innocent with his new goat's hoof chew toy. Finally in case anyone was wondering "what will he look like when he gets old and wrinkly"? I give you the Benjamin Button of Puppies.

Puppy Pounce and First Hike

The Professor went on his first off-leash outdoor hike yesterday. I unfortunately forgot my camera but we will definitely be going again. Aunt Sarah found this great place called Stevenson Bridge. Its a deep ravine with Putah Creek at the bottom so its too steep to escape easily and there lots of interesting stuff down there (especially if you ignore the "No Trespassing" and "Beware of Dog" Signs). First the Professor found a rabbit leg with foot still attached that he carried around until we could get it away, so proud of his lucky jack rabbit foot. I am thrilled to report we have a fearless water dog on our hands. He went straight into the freezing cold creek and splashed around. Remember those signs we ignored earlier? Well thats when we met the guard dog. Sarah and both had our shoes off and were in the creek with the Professor when we heard the constant barking of the creek guard. When he started coming down the banks towards us Sarah attempted to distract him but puppies are just too interesting. He was growling and barking and had a scary snarl on his face and that's when I remembered that we had brought hotdogs. I tossed the scary dog and handfull of hotdog bits and the professor and I escaped around the back while the creek guardian went crazy for hotdogs. It was a daring escape! Later Aunt Sarah showed her true devotion to the Professor by chasing him down and diving for him as he ran back towards the scary dog. Apparently even aggressive dogs seem like they should want to play with the Professor.

The End of the Great Potty Streak

60 hours of accident free bliss ended painfully this morning for Sean when the Professor, becoming increasingly more stubborn, refused to take advantage of his outside time and peed a streak from the kitchen through the livingroom to the aquarium where is was finally stopped and had already finished peeing anyway. The Professor spent another 2 hours at the dog park yesterday and decided to relentlessly hump a four month old german shepherd, kudos to the Professor for picking a female this time and a big thumbs down for getting so rough with her.

Puppy Day Two

Professor Farnsworth slept through the whole night! I was supposed to take him down at 2:30am but I turned off the alarm and went back to sleep and he made it! We had another exhausting day today, he spent another hour at the dog park and then watched us have lunch outside. He is very smart and learned the hand signals for sit, down and a funny little baby crawl he likes to do anyway so we're going to train it as a trick. He learned what a bicycle is today and found all the people riding by on our walk extremely interesting. This afternoon we took a 3 hour nap on the couch while Daddy watched the Chargers. Professor Farnsworth likes watching football almost as much as I do. His newest habit is leaping into the bushes and then burrowing under the ivy like a little chipmunk. Tomorrow will be interesting he'll have to spend most of the day in the crate and then we have a Tequlia party to attend so Auntie Sarah S is coming over to puppysit no doubt she will teach the professor to dressage or bark opera in no time.

The First Night

Pictures from the first night. Sarah S, Ina, Becki, Kati and Kim all came over to meet the professor his first night here. He is very playful and loves people. He had never seen stairs before so we had to teach him how to go up and down them but he seems to have mastered that skill very quickly. At the end of the night we fell asleep together on the couch. He only whined at little bit in his crate during the night but he managed to throw up twice and pee in his bed. Today he has managed to poop outside three times with no accidents although the peeing is another issue. We spent 2 hours at the dog park where the Professor met about 30 different dogs and relentlessly humped a basset hound named Bruce. He has made many friends today and I was a joy to see him having so much fun. He still strongly dislikes the car probably because he threw up in it twice on the way home from the shelter but he is learning. We will certainly become regular patrons of the dog park.

Picking up Prof. Farnsworth from the Shelter

Professor Farnsworth start out has Clyde from the puppy pair, Bonnie and Clyde. We tried to adopt his sister first but she was rescued on Wednesday so we were offered Clyde on Thursday morning and picked him up Friday night. He is approximately 4 months old, 35ish pounds and was listed as a Lab/Pointer Mix but we think he has some dalmation cause he got lots of spots on his nose and feet. These are the adoption pictures of "Clyde" from the shelter who will hencefort be known as Professor Clyde Thaddius Farnsworth Esq. III or "Professor".
